6 Tips for Kiddos with Curly Hair

*This post has been sponsored by Johnson’s®, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.*

Our daughter, Lily, has had curly hair since she was a year old! It took a little while for me to find ways to help her hair live its best life, but we now have a great routine! Here are a few things we do weekly to keep her curls happy and healthy!

1. Use A Shampoo Tailored For Curly Hair

This is a big one because for the longest time, I was using regular shampoo on her. I didn’t even know they carried washes specifically for curly hair. I started noticing that her hair was tangled and frizzy no matter what I did. Using a shampoo specifically for her curly hair was a GAME CHANGER. We now use the JOHNSON’S® Curl-Defining Shampoo. It smooths her frizz and is recommended for curly hair! I also love that it’s hypoallergenic and has no parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or dyes. We buy ours at Walmart! I just add it to my online Walmart grocery pickup order and we’re all set! Super easy!

2. Choose Wash Days

We only wash her hair 1-2 times per week. We’ll usually choose a day or two that works for us and then stick to those days as our “washing days” so that we don’t lose track of when we last washed it. I find that if we wash it too often, it takes away the natural oils in her hair! The ends of her hair start to feel dry if we wash it every day.

3. No Heat Needed

I don’t use any heat on her hair! Even after a shower, I always let her hair air dry. Heat has a way of ruining curls, and I’ve seen people damage their curls by using heat products—so I try to stay away from using anything.

4. Leave In That Conditioner

Moisture and hydration are what keep Lily’s curls smooth and shiny. So, we use the JOHNSON’S® Curl Defining Leave-In Conditioner. We put it in as soon as she gets out of the shower, and it keeps her ringlets in place. It has 24-hour curl and wave definition, so when she gets home from a day of school and dance, her curls are still holding their shape!

5. Brush Regularly

I used to be afraid to brush her curls! But, I’ve learned that brushing helps to detangle her hair and makes it easier for her to manage. We brush using a wide-toothed comb, and we brush right after the shower once her conditioner is put in. We only brush her hair when it’s wet!

6. Let Your Hair Down

Embrace those curls! The more that Lily wears her hair down, the more it has naturally softened her curls and trained them to lay the way she wants them to. It has also helped her to love her hair no matter what it looks like each day!
